Is reading a lost pastime?

I sometimes think reading books is a dying out pastime, people would rather watch a movie, surf the net or play computer games. Technology has taken over, people will tell you that they don’t have time to read but they always have time for their favourite t.v shows. So it’s not really about having the time, it’s more that they don’t really want to read.

Take my other half for example he says reading it boring. I think I stared at him open mouthed when he first told me that. Boring? How can reading be boring? He’d rather watch the film, I’ll sit and pick it apart and decide that the book was much better. When I watch a film I don’t just watch the film, I chat or do something else and never completely lose myself into it. Reading though is a complete escape for me – a chance to turn my mind off from everything that is happening in the world and lose myself in someone else’s world.

Then he told me only old men read, I mean what is that all about? Is it true? I don’t know the reading habits of men my own age so I have no idea if they read or not? Do they? Or is it really only old men?!

I think the internet and pc’s in general have a lot to answer for. We have become so accustomed to  scanning pages to find out what we need. Using CTRL + F to locate key words in documents. Has this all rendered people incapable of processing large quantities of writing, to actually read an entire chapter without scanning the pages and picking out the parts where the drama happens.

I find it quite sad that people are reading less and less, will our grandchildren even have a book shelf in their house? Or will it all be done online? I think reading it very important and I love reading to Joshua already even though he doesn’t understand and just wants to take the book from me. I really want to encourage him to read though, he won’t be having a tv and a computer in his room. He can read at bedtime not watch tele when he is older. Even know he has his hard back books and he loves to play with them. I’m hoping this is a good sign.

What are your thoughts?

  1. He thinks it's boring? Hmh not that I know a lot of guys my age, but I know not every guy likes to read. What I think is really strange. Perhaps they just like more action :p

But I think it's a good idea to make Joshua read books, esp. that he won't get a tv and computer till later.

I still really like to read. I just like to read more in the summertime than in the wintertime, which is a bit weird lol.

  2. I can't remember when the last time it was I saw my brother crack open a book to read. And I'm not including magazines either. The only thing I've seen him read the newspaper. Plus I haven't seen my dad read anything in my house at all. I've seen my mom read, but that is the only other person then me. I think men are just too lazy to open up a book and read.

I don't find reading boring at all. I'm like you Lu, I get carried away in the story I read and forget all about the time when I'm reading.

I'm sure that since you are reading to Joshua at night and stuff that he will enjoy reading when he gets older and learn his letters.
I've seen a commercial for this product that has baby's learning to read at a young age. Then seeing 3 yr old reading a book that is meant for older children. I don't mind pushing a child to read early, but that is just scare. I would rather see a child learn in their own way and at the same pace as other kids in school.

I need to get back to reading an not online either. I love hold a book and reading the words off the paper. I've got so much books on my shelf that it's full. Really need to try to get rid of some, but just so hard to let go of books that I've bought.

  4. Sounds familiar! James hates reading as well! I once even got him this book on his favourite football team and he hasn't even read that yet! :s He's always like "I don't have time to read", but when he has a day off, he does find time to surf the net for hours? Hmmm... Something ain't right :p

I actually find it said that reading is associated with "boring" and especially "boring people". I prefer reading a book than watching a film tbh. With the book, you can use your imagination, with the film, everuything is done for you and there is no fantasy to be used anymore... Quite sad really! :p

And I know one thing, if I ever have kids, they will be getting loads and loads of books for their birthdays/Christmasses/whatever! :p ZEven if it's just for my own entertainment! LOL (or is that mean? ;) )

  5. I know just because we read does not make us boring people... it makes us interesting I think! We probably have a way better imagination than people who just watch films!

No it's not mean, books are great! I have asked my Mum to buy Joshua the whole beatrix Potter set of his birthday. He's way to young to even have them yet, cos he will tear them but I want them there anyway ... maybe it's cos i wanna read them! lol

  6. Ooooh, reading is soo the best thing ever. I deffo prefer a book over watching a movie and have yet to see a movie of which I've read the book first and then like the movie better. I always always love the book a thousand times better.

And good stuff, I have a 18 year old brother that reads :o :p Not as frequently as me but he does take up a book without me having to make him. Like to believe my educational skill have something to do with that, always gave him books for his birthdays when he was younger lol

I love to encourage kids to read, in my class they HAVE to read half an hour a day and I take my own favourite books for them to read and discuss. That works wonders really. And I also use the time to do a bit of reading myself, if they see me read that encourages them to read themselves. Who knows, they might keep it up lol

  7. The only thing men read are newspaper, comic books and anything that might do with machines. LOL

  8. To be honest I prefer doing other things- ie listening to music, surfing the net, to reading. And if I do read, I have music in background as I can't stand silence for some reason- always need background noise! So often get distracted. But if a book draws me in then I ignore the music

I have a friend my own age who is on holiday this week but he seems to be reading a lot- probably because he has the time to, no idea about other men though. I often think its easier to read at holiday times- more time and less distractions.

Its great that you are reading to Joshua and will encourage him to read, it is important from a early age I know!
